Chapter Nine: Monkey Suit

Dan Albright waited on the sidewalk in front of Godiva Chocolatier. It looked like he’d run a hand through his hair a few times too many. It stuck in thick clumps, but it made him more ruggedly handsome. I noted he didn’t come bearing chocolates, which was too bad. After everything I’d been through, I deserved chocolate.

He jerked the driver door open, did a quick double take over his shoulder and said, “Scoot. Did you really see her?”

I scooted. He sounded preoccupied. “I texted you as much. Yes. Red hair. Freckles. A munchkin. It’s her. Unmistakable. She’s dressed as a cop, and she took the subway heading downtown. I would have followed her, but I was driving.”

“Followed her? Are you delirious?”

“Well, I have been basting in salmonella fumes…but no.”

“Ce. No following anyone. I don’t mind you tagging along—”

“Tagging along? Hello? I think you’re dragging me along.”

“—or watching the door, but don’t…do anything rash.”

“Rash?” I bristled. “I’m never rash. I don’t go in with guns blazing—things just happen around me and I react.”

“Fine. Don’t react without me—you’ve done that before. This case is more delicate than you know.”

“Meaning I don’t have the whole story.”

“You’re absolutely sure it was her?”

A non-answer from Dan is very much an answer, so I let it slide. “Yes. I called her by name and she bolted into traffic. It was Kendal Schmidt. She looked right at me. Well, she looked right through me.”

“At least we know she’s here and that she’s alive.”

“Alive? Was there any question?”

“There’s always a question.”

“That’s rather dark.”

“I’ve been around the block. Sometimes things end pretty fucking badly.” His voice was tight.

“Should I be worried that I’m being targeted by the creepy ex?”

“I don’t think so. He doesn’t have a record. No history of violence. Not even a traffic violation. He looks worse than he is.”

“I find that impossible to believe.”

“It was Kendal who threatened Gunter. That’s a fact, Caesar. So don’t do anything hasty. Lester Finch was humiliated by Gun and dumped by Kendal and fired by the studio—he’s had a hard week. The accident”—again with that word—“shouldn’t be too high on his list of priorities.”

Easy for him to say. He hadn’t seen Lester’s fingers.

Dan maneuvered the car into an unlikely opening in traffic—a bit fast for my taste—and we headed speedily toward the job I was eons late for.

We zipped the length of one block and caught the tail end of the light.

“You can slow down if you like. Poppy and Andre are back with the van. I have a few minutes.” A tiny, tiny white lie, but I was gripping the dash with both hands as we left taxis behind us in the smog. Dan bombed down Fifth Avenue, cutting expertly between cars and delivery trucks. This was cop driving. Intense, focused, determined cop driving. I waited for him to slap one of those Starsky and Hutch sirens on the roof.

“We’re fine.”

“If you say so, but that lady and her dog just long-jumped the crosswalk.”

“Relax.”

I pried my nails from the dash and checked the security of my seat belt.
